As a SHINee fan, I, like many, have been wondering how and when the group would address the saddest and most difficult part of their 10th anniversary comeback: the passing of lead vocalist Jonghyun in December 2017.
They have done it beautifully and poignantly and on their own terms with the release of ‘Our Page’, the title track from ‘The Story of Light Ep 3’.
We knew from the teasers that had been released that this was going to be ‘the song’, and it is a touchingly heartfelt and very personal song. The lyrics were written by the members themselves along with SM Entertainment songwriter Kenzie.
In Korean, the song title reads 네가 남겨둔 말 and translates to ‘The words you left behind’.
According to SM Entertainment, it reflects the group’s message of ‘We will be together until the end’. This reflection is never more evident than when Minho sings “When I look back on the path that I walked along, I see five folded hands, tears and memories”.
The lyrics continue “The beautiful words you left behind/They become a poem, a song“, in reference to Jonghyun’s talent as a songwriter. “Voices fly to the place where you are/We know it will reach you”.
The song itself is a hybrid pop and R&B track. There is a minimalist approach to the instrumentation with a gentle haunting electronic piano driving much of the song with the addition of percussion elements which add weight to the chorus.
The chorus takes the song higher and gives it wings with the beautiful layering of their voices over each other. It’s an evocative and emotive moment that solidifies the now 4-member group and their continuing journey which is recognised with the line, “This unfinished novel, we’ll fill it until the last page”.
The accompanying music video will pull at heart strings even more as it features each of the members in their solitude carrying out the tasks and working hard before they come together to perform the song. They ascend the stairs together and stand behind their microphones to sing while a fifth mic stand is left alone in the front, empty and untouched.

In a final touching gesture at 4.35 in the music video the words ‘You did well‘, are spoken in Korean.
It is a fitting and beautiful way to draw the activities for SHINee‘s ‘The Story of Light’ to a close.
