Well the MAMA’s are over and it was a spectacular event! MNET held true to their word and made the night about collaboration stages. One after another the performances were a combination of theatrics and style, all too amazing to believe.
The night started off with a solo performance by EXO’s resident dance machine Kai. It must have been quite a thrill to take to the stage of such an important award show by himself. With the use of the large screen behind him, Kai pulled off quite an entertaining performance.
From Kai’s solo performance we went straight into Korean rock band Jaurim’s stage. Kim Yoon Ah looked stunning and the band pulled off an amazing version of their song “Icarus” titled “Enter The Dragon“. The band had the help of both DJ Doc member Lee Haneul and solo performer Jay Park. It was a great way to get the show started and set the tone for the rest of the night’s performances.
Lee Seung Gi took to the stage as our official MC for the night. He spoke about how the eyes of all music fans were on Hong Kong at that very moment to see the wonderful stages planned for the evening.
We then finally get into the reason for the show. The awards! The first award presented was Best Dance Performance – Female Solo. And the announcement of the winner was the start of the YG artists march to the stage. CL, leader of 2NE1, took the award for her solo song “The Baddest Female“. CL’s fellow group members, showed her much love for winning the award. Following the female solo award, they then proceeded to announce Best Dance Performance – Female Group. Sistar’s “Give It To Me” was chosen, the three members present at the award show accepted the award, dressed somewhat casually, but still very stylish.
We continue right on with the awards with Best Music Video Award. One of the most coveted awards, and with a nominee list containing G-Dragon, Psy and Busker Busker it was surely a tough choice. But the YG takeover continued and G-Dragon’s “Coup D’Etat” was named the winner.
Things got a little more covert at this point. We got to see the first VCR of the evening, with the always willing to get into trouble duo of Hyuna and Hyunseung. The Trouble Maker duo appeared to be playing the part of spies in the VCR. With Hyunseung appearing to be Hyuna’s back up while she delivers a briefcase with unknown contents. As she delivers the briefcase we see a tattoo on the hand of a masked man, giving us our first clue as to who the collaborator for the Trouble Maker stage might be. An infinity symbol can plainly be seen but as Hyuna walks away and the man opens the case, we see not some treasure inside but a bomb. As the figurative smoke clears we are back on the MAMA stage as Hyuna walks out, carrying a gun, to take care of business for the “Gangs Of Hong Kong” collaboration stage with Infinite. It seems an appropriate concept for them both, seeing that they have each done the criminal concept for their music videos. We cut to the stage and we watch as Hyuna raises from the depths, gun in hand. After she clears the stage and Hyunseung joins her they start their performance of their current single “Now“. Following their steamy stage, including a fantastic dance break, Hyunseung becomes the victim of a sniper shot and Infinite make their way up to have their turn. They start their stage with a dance intro before segueing into “BTD“. Following the stellar performance they then sang their latest track “Destiny“. Always known for their precision when dancing, tonight was no different. Hyuna ended the performance with a twist, pulling a gun on Infinite member Hoya but not shooting him and instead revealing her infinity tattoo.
Off to the next set of awards, first up was the Discovery Of The Year Award, a fairly new award, this was only it’s third year being offered and Baechigi took the honor this year. Following them was the announcement of Best New Female Artist, and a very tough crowd of nominee’s for 2013 there was. With Lee Hi and Ladies Code on the short list it was a pleasant surprise for Crayon Pop to hear their name announced as the winner.
Back to the stage for another round of performance. One of the few solo stages of the night was by Aaron Kwok the winner of Best Asian Artist China. Aaron is a singer, dancer and actor that has been around since the 1980’s. His stages are always considered to be over the top and entertaining and his MAMA performance was no exception. Following that performance we move on to Best Male Artist, it is possible that many thought that Psy would walk away with the award this year considering the success he has continued to have but it was not him but one of his label mates wining his second award of the night, G-Dragon who won the honor.
More YG artists took to the stage but this time it was for a performance and not for wining an award. 2NE1 started their stage by performing their pop ballad “Lonely” followed by their debut performance of “Missing You“. Both stages were lovely and the girls vocals shone through. It wasn’t hard to see them pouring their heart into the performance. The lights dim at the end of their stage and as they come back up Swedish duo Icona Pop are taking center stage. The girls were dressed in mirrored dresses that only made their performance of “All Night” shine all the more. They moved seamlessly into “I Love It” and with the help of a little rapping by CL they finished up their stage with style.
Now for the first of the three big awards . Song Of The Year has been taken home in previous years by such artists as Psy, Miss A and the Wonder Girls. This year the award went to Cho Yong Pil for his song “Bounce“. Unfortunately he was not able to attend the awards and gave his acceptance speech via video.
The Dancing 9 dancers then put on an amazing performance as they made their way to the stage to present the award for Best Dance Performance – Male Solo. Taking his third trip to the stage G-Dragon walked away with the award. Following that award was the award for Best Vocal Performance – Female, and as the announcers went to make the announcement the crowd beat them to it, chanting her name before it could even be announced. Ailee, looking elegant, made her way to the front to accept her award.
It’s hard to call it the most anticipated performance of the night but it definitely had many people curious. With an announcement already having been released about this collaboration, expectations had to have been high. And once it was over, those expectations had to have been meet. Ylvis, the comedy duo from Norway, took to the stage to perform their viral hit “What Does The Fox Say“. Complete with fox costumes and a larger than life inflatable fox the stage was as crazy as the song. The idols had enjoyed many of the stages already this evening but the Ylvis stage seemed to really get not only the crowd jumping but the idols as well. But it didn’t stop there. Ylvis finished their song and the adorable five member girl group Crayon Pop took center stage to perform their very popular “Bar Bar Bar” song. Complete with toy guns and capes their performance was as cute as ever. Yet this couldn’t be all their collaboration stage was, and of course it wasn’t. As “Bar Bar Bar” got close to the end Ylvis joined the girls on stage again, this time sporting their own safety helmets and joining in the “Bar Bar Bar” dance. Even the inflatable fox got it’s own helmet. Truly a fine collaboration of East meeting West!
After that amazing performance more awards had to be given out, with Sistar winning the Style In Music award for their amazing outfits both on and off the stage.
Next up for collaborations were 2 contestants from the SuperStar television show, Park Jaejung and Zhu Jiajia. Their stage was very nice and they harmonized quite well on the songs.
Next Generation Global Star award was announced next and the winner was girl group A Pink who looked absolutely smashing in black and gold, this was the first year for this award. Right after that the award for World Wide Performer was chosen with Infinite taking home the trophy. This is only the second time for this award, and last year’s winner was Big Bang. Ylvis then got to come back to the stage but this time to accept an award, they were awarded International Favorite Artist.
Next we are treated to another VCR, this time it’s for boy group EXO’s performance. The boys are chained to desks, with the same girl from their music video watching over them. They break themselves free and start their stage, dancing on 2 set’s piled with desks. They then started their “Growl” performance. They really seemed to enjoy themselves on the stage, with lots of smiles and fan service in the performance. They then have a dance break to a jazzy sounding “Growl”. The boys then finished up their stage by performing their hit song “Wolf“.
We then had the second big award announcement for Artist Of The Year. With the list of previous winners including such performers as TVXQ, Super Junior and 2NE1 it is quite an achievement to win the award. Extraordinarily making his fourth trip to the stage, G-Dragon claimed the award. This was his first time winning the award himself but he had claimed the honor twice before with his fellow band mates in Big Bang.
The next performer was also one of our winners and the MC for the night Lee Seung Gi. He performed an amazing orchestral version of his song “Return“, which was the song he won Best Vocal Performance – Male for. The next award was for Best Rap Performance and with a little help from the audience Dynamic Duo were announced the winners. They then went on to announce Best Band Performance, which Busker Busker was happy to claim.
One of the nights most special guests was then invited to the stage to accept their award. G-Dragon, Seungri and Taeyang of Big Bang presented Stevie Wonder with the Music Makes One Global Ambassador Award. Stevie Wonder spoke of how music, specifically music about love, can make the world a better place. The speech was a very touching and heart warming moment for the award show.
Then the audience was treated to a very special performance by returning superstar Rain. Rain finished his two year mandatory military service in July and this was his first time since then performing on an award show. Rain performed several of his award winning hits, showing that 2 years in the military had not dulled his ability to perform as the international superstar that he is. It was also quite cute to see the girls of A Pink fan-girling over the “man of the moment“.
Best Female Group winner’s Girls Generation took to the stage to say their thank you’s, unfortunately only 2 of the girls could make the awards. This was their second time winning the award. Following them was Best Male Group, Infinite. This was their first time winning an award of this magnitude. And they all seemed very pleased to be able to thank everyone, including their fans for the award.
Big Bang then took to the stage to have their turn to perform. First we were treated to individual stages by each member. Starting with a premier performance of TOP’s “Doom Dada” and then followed by Taeyang’s latest solo venture “Ringa Linga“. This was then followed by Seungri doing a short dance performance to “Strong Baby” and then continuing his performance with “Let’s Talk About Love“. The last of the solo stages was G-Dragon, unfortunatly Daesung did not have a solo stage. G-Dragon performed “Crooked” and then was joined on stage by all the members, including Daesung for “Fantastic Baby“. They were all over the stage, even getting the idols into the dance.
The very stylish looking Lee Hyori took to center stage next to receive the award for Best Female Artist. In her thank you speech she mentioned how much she was enjoying married life and was glad to get this opportunity to greet her fans.
The last award of the night and the highest honor was Album Of The Year. Competition was stiff with both new and old artists competing. It may or may not have come to a surprise to you, but the winners of the award were probably fairly shocked. They only debuted last year but are already racking the awards up under the belt. EXO walked away with one more for their growing pile with this award.
The last collaboration of the night was also the last stage. The stage started off with Sistar’s Hyolin singing “I Just Called To Say I Love You“. She walked to the middle stage and joined none other than Stevie Wonder and preceded to sing along with him. Then Aaron Kwok joined them on stage to continue the performance. Stevie then did a little montage of some of his songs.
The ending of the night was very surprising. With Paris Hilton rising from the stage on a DJ table. The best part of the performance though had to be the feather pillows that were brought onto stage and even used by the idols to have an impromptu pillow fight!
