On January 18th, former GFRIEND main vocalist YUJU released the MV to her solo debut title track, ‘Play’. Her 1st mini album, ‘[REC.]’ was also released simultaneously. This comes after a long anticipated wait since her signing under KONNECT Entertainment back in September last year. This follows the shock disbandment of the highly successful girl group, GFRIEND. YUJU‘s debut marks the first official music debut from any of the members since the sextet parted ways in May 2021.
‘Play’ features a mash of modern drum production with traditional Korean instruments used in the instrumental. This combination makes the track flow seamlessly between the verses and chorus. With elegant touches throughout, the steady rhythm chugs the track along to its message of being played by love. The singer’s are more matured compared to her former group days, with a bigger focus on her lower register as compared to her renowned belted high notes. The airy quality of her voice beautifully glides over the backtrack.

YUJU ‘PLAY’ MV:
The music video is striking. Split into its red and blue colour scheme, we see the singer supported with backup dancers, showing a more mature charm with the choreography. The traditional elements in the instrumental are given a nod with the blue set showing the songstress in a aqua blue detailed Hanbok.
